Budapest, my new hometown, is a city rich in history, culture, and stunning architecture. On both sides of Danube River, it offers a blend of Eastern and Western European influences. If you are seeking an unforgettable experience, here are the top 15 must-visit attractions in Budapest:

Buda Castle

Buda Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage site that has seen many historical events. Today, it houses the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum, making it a must-visit attraction in Budapest. The architecture is to admire!

2. Fisherman’s Bastion

Located near Buda Castle, this neo-Gothic terrace provides panoramic views of the Danube and Pest. Its seven towers symbolize the seven Magyar tribes that founded Hungary, making it a another must-visit site in Budapest.

An architectural masterpiece, the Parliament Building is one of Budapest’s most iconic landmarks. Visitors can admire its intricate design and explore its grand interiors through guided tours. It is one of the most recognized landmarks of the country.

4. St. Stephen’s Basilica

This majestic basilica, named after Hungary’s first king, boasts a stunning interior and offers panoramic city views from its dome. There are two types of tours. One offering to see only the interior, and another one that also lets you see the panoramic view. I personally have been inside the basilica, and it is a real masterpiece. I paid around 5 euros. For the panoramic view tour I think was around 7 euros.

For breathtaking views of Budapest, a hike up Gellért Hill is essential. Atop the hill stands the Citadella, a fortress with historical significance. It is a great place for a family to spend time. There is an amazing playground with very big slides. The kids will enjoy it, and will enjoy the green nature all around.

7. Heroes’ Square

This expansive square features the Millennium Monument. Commemorating Hungary’s 1,000-year history, it is flanked by the Museum of Fine Arts and the Hall of Art. Another must-see attraction in Budapest.

8. Margaret Island

A tranquil oasis in the heart of the Danub. Margaret Island offers many parks, walking paths, and recreational facilities, making it perfect for a leisurely day out. Great for nature lovers and one of my favorite places in Budapest. There is so much to be done there, or nothing at all, just enjoying a nice walk. You can freely plan to spend few hours here.

9. Great Market Hall

Budapest’s largest indoor market is a haven for food enthusiasts, offering traditional Hungarian produce, meats, pastries, and souvenirs. It is a top attraction for anyone visiting Budapest.

10. Dohány Street Synagogue

As the largest synagogue in Europe, it stands as a testament to Budapest’s rich Jewish heritage. It is accompanied by the Jewish Museum. The synagogue is one of the must-visit attractions in Budapest.

11. Andrássy Avenue

This elegant boulevard, lined with neo-Renaissance mansions and townhouses, leads to Heroes’ Square and is home to the Hungarian State Opera House. This avenue is among the top must-visit spots in Budapest.
